Karzai at alma mater: India by our side, we will recover

Express News ServiceSHIMLA, NOVEMBER 15: Giving a call to collectively fight terrorism, the President of Afghanistan, Dr Hamid Karzai today said that terrorism had destroyed Afghanistan and pushed his country 30 years back. “The world has to get rid of the problem,” he said.

Dr Karzai, who was at Shimla on a private trip to visit his alma mater, Himachal Pradesh University, said the nations should follow the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi. Stating that India had good relations with Afghanistan, Dr Karzai said his country would look forward to strengthen these ties. He said India had made the remarkable contribution to rebuild Afghanistan. India is among the countries which stand in the front line to help us,” he said.

Asked if he would prefer a second term, he said, “Afghanistan is a legacy that should continue. I will introspect and consider if I am able to fulfil what I had thought in terms of rebuilding Afghanistan. I will like to hand over the torch of leadership to the younger generation” to continue a saga, that is Afghanistan.

He said that Afghanistan was politically stable, however suffering in terms of infrastructure. “We are making a rapid growth and will be able to recover soon,” he said. He said his nation was committed to resist terrorism and their effort in this direction would continue.
