SUICIDE cases are on the rise according to reports from different parts of the world coming daily. There have always been some agonising stories behind all such cases, but sanity demands that before taking this drastic action a human being should realise that he does not own his life as it is given by God as a valuable gift.

Suicide is a forbidden act and a person should understand that the world is ready to spend billions of dollars to find ways to prolong life and retain it for ever but it is impossible.Islam does not compromise on the suicide issue. It is decreed as Haram, and it is not allowed for a Muslim to even desire for death, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) says:
Don't desire any one to die, if he is a nice person, his quality may increase, and if he is careless he may return to the straight path. (Bukhari)In another statement, he says: Don't desire death; don't pray for it before its arrival, if someone dies naturally his deeds barren, according to a believer his life gives him more values, (Narrated by Muslim)
When we look into the cases of suicides, we find that everyone of them had his own reasons to commit suicide. It could be anything finance, loss of love, failure in the exams, etc.
Human beings should understand that they are living in this universe with billions of other people like them. Anyone of them may face difficulties sometimes, but it is never permanent in nature. It may be overcome with time. Therefore if anyone faces depression sometimes, he should think of better times ahead and try to overcome the feelings of gloom and frustration which lead to such action as to terminate one’s own life.
One should make his life worth enjoying and the obstacle coming across in life should be taken as a momentary hardships.
He should think that without him there is no father for his children, there is no husband for his wife other than him, there is no son to his parents like him, there is no alternate solution for his dependents without him and by committing suicide he will only create more problems for them.
The future of a person is not predictable. Many people who are rich today were not in such position yesterday, then why one should not think about a better future for himself. One has to patiently wait for the moment when life takes a turn for the better. Allah will solve all the problems faced by him, if he fully submits to His will.
By suicide we generally mean killing oneself on the spur of the moment, but there are many undeclared gradual killings as well. When a diabetic patient doesn't care for his health and goes on eating sugar and does not take the required medication, he gradually kills himself.
Likewise by smoking and consuming liquor one may risk heart disease and whenever anybody smokes or drinks he attempts to gradually kill himself which is equal to suicide. That is the reason Islam prohibits all these vices.
Alcohol is already mentioned in the Holy Quran as Haram. And for smoking, the cigarette manufacturing companies themselves carry a warning for the users that smoking is injurious to health. I don't think anyone needs a new fatwa against smoking.
Islam as a religion does not confine itself to mere rituals, it is a comprehensive code of life, offering solution to all problems facing the entire humanity, but unfortunately it has been misunderstood due to some of its uneducated followers.
